Opioid Addiction Treatment Q & A

What are opioids?

Opioids are a type of drug that are typically used for pain relief. They’re derived from the opium poppy plant, and work by blocking pain signals between your brain and your body. Beyond alleviating pain symptoms, opioids can also put you in an intense state of relaxation, or make you feel “high.”

Opioids come in many different forms, both legal and illegal. Some of the most commonly used opioids include:

  • Prescription opioids like OxyContin® and Vicodin®
  • Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that’s highly potent
  • Heroin, the illegal street drug

Prescription opioids can be incredibly effective in treating pain when used responsibly, which means taking them for a set amount of time and under supervision from a medical professional. Your health care provider might prescribe opioids for you in order to help with recovery from a surgery or injury, or to provide relief from chronic pain or health conditions like cancer.

Due to their highly addictive nature, however, opioid misuse and addiction have quickly become a growing epidemic.

What is opioid addiction?

In the case of opioids, misuse and addiction can take on a number of forms, including:

  • Not following your health care provider’s instructions in taking opioids
  • Taking opioids for the purpose of getting high
  • Using opioids that weren’t prescribed for you

Opioid misuse has become a public health crisis in the United States. The rate of patients who misuse their prescribed opioids is between 21-29%. In 2017, the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality estimated that there were 1.7 million people in the United States who suffered from substance use disorders of prescription opioid pain relievers, and 652,000 who suffered from heroin use disorders.

Misuse and even proper use of opioids can cause you to build up a tolerance to the drug, leading you to take higher and more frequent doses. This is problematic because opioids can restrict your ability to breathe at high doses, which can lead to fatal overdoses. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 130 people die every day in the United States as the result of an opioid overdose.

What is involved in opioid addiction treatment?

A combination of counseling and medications from Atlantic Health & Wellness Center can provide relief from opioid addiction.

Medications like SUBOXONE® and SUBUTEX® work to decrease the withdrawal symptoms and cravings of opioids and help restore balance to the mechanisms in your brain that have been affected by addiction.

Naltrexone (like Vivitrol®), prevents your body from feeling the high that you normally get from alcohol and opioid use. This makes it an incredibly useful drug in helping to prevent relapse after addiction treatment.

Atlantic Health & Wellness Center offers affordable and convenient addiction treatment, plus convenient telemedicine visits for follow-ups and refills for stable patients.
